Efficient spraying, lower running costs put NSW grower 'miles in front'

Crestmead, Queensland (21 August, 2025) — Efficient spraying of weeds with minimal disturbance of the soil is critical to the 7500-hectare broadacre farming aggregation managed by Angus Siddins, and it's the reason why the John Deere R975i trailed sprayer is top of his shopping list.

Mr Siddins is a beef producer and grain grower, based on 'Yannarie' at North Star, NSW, where he crops wheat, barley, chickpeas, sorghum and dryland and irrigated cotton.

He follows conservation farming principles, which relies on efficient spraying rather than tillage to reduce weed pressure.

"We are in the business of farming moisture before anything else, and no-till farming gives us the fullest bucket at the start of the season," Mr Siddins said.

"Spraying is the key component of our system, the driver that enables us to preserve stubble, reduce weeds and retain moisture."

A proven performer in Mr Siddins' machinery shed is a John Deere 412R self-propelled sprayer with See & Spray™ Select, which he bought in 2023, and he's now looking to invest in the John Deere MY2025 R975i trailed sprayer to boost capacity and productivity.

The R975i sprayer offers intelligent features and integrated solutions like 3-metre track spacing for controlled traffic farming; a 7,500-litre tank with PowrSpray™ automatic filling, spraying and rinsing; and a 36-metre boom spray with TerrainCommand™ Pro, that automatically maintains a constant spray height on uneven ground.

The optional John Deere See & Spray Select integrated camera technology detects green weeds as small as 1.5cm in fallow and triggers a targeted treatment application from multiple nozzles to these plants only.

"The R975i trailed sprayer is attractive to us because it provides more capacity, less compaction, and the running costs are lower, which is what it's all about now — reducing costs to increase profitability," Mr Siddins said.

"The See & Spray Select technology has proven to be hugely beneficial in getting across the country efficiently. Everything is based on time, so if you can do that more efficiently with less downtime, you're just miles in front."

John Deere Production and Precision Ag Marketing Manager, Royce Bell, said the technology and specifications of the MY2025 R975i create huge value for farmers, especially through the use of See and Spray Select in the summer fallow.

"In addition to See & Spray Select the R975i trailed sprayers have all the integrated technology similar to our self-propelled sprayers with G5 Display and data captured through Operations Center as well as other great features," Mr Bell said.

"The tank placement of the R975i is unique. Its position between the trailer chassis provides a low centre of gravity and phenomenal stability with the 3-metre track spacing, and the 36-metre boom with TerrainCommand™ Pro system provides really good in-field operation and performance.

"The R975i also has Solution Command, a touchpad to control the filling and inducting of chemical into the sprayer, and Active Pause, which pauses solution tank filling while adding the chemistry into the system to prevent the risk of overfilling."

The versatility of the R975i trailed sprayer as a stand-alone investment, or alongside a John Deere self-propelled sprayer in an operation like Mr Siddins', would significantly boost productivity, Mr Bell said.

"As well as accurately controlling weeds, the R975i conserves moisture through its spacing for controlled traffic farming. And growers who just want to run a trailed sprayer on its own can still access the versatility of in-season and summer fallow spraying through choosing See and Spray Select."
