Green by Nature Backs Green Machines for Turf Work at Scale
Crestmead, Queensland (7 September, 2026) — FROM high-profile sports stadiums and training venues, to busy school ovals and expansive council parklands, Green by Nature's turf teams manage some of Australia's most visible and heavily used green spaces.
For Turf Operations Manager, Damien Roser, keeping those spaces ready for recreation and public use requires reliability, timing and machinery that can handle vastly different conditions.
It is a challenge Mr Roser knows well, having spent the past 22 years with the business after starting as a sports turf apprentice with Green Options straight out of school.
During that time, Green Options grew from about 20 full-time employees into a national business, before joining with Recreational Services, Skyline Landscape Services and Supa Gardens to form Green by Nature in 2023.
Today, the award-winning business is a trans-Tasman operation with more than 2,000 people, with Mr Roser as one of four operations managers in NSW.
Compact tractors in a city short on space
Across Sydney, Green by Nature runs nine John Deere tractors, including six John Deere 4066R tractors, two John Deere 5075E tractors and one John Deere 5090M tractor.
The 4066R tractors are mainly used for sports field renovation work, including aeration, scarifying and top dressing. The 5075E tractors run large roller mowers across open space, while the 5090M is allocated to heavier work and larger implements.
In a city where open space is often limited and access can be difficult, Mr Roser said the agile size and low impact of the 4066R had made it indispensable.
"The 4066Rs are compact, they go on the back of trucks, they are easy to manoeuvre around and they have good accessibility," Mr Roser said.
"They can go in when the weather is bad. Areas can be wet and they can still get in there, rather than having a big agricultural tractor that will destroy the place."
Technology and operator comfort are also part of the buying decision, with Mr Roser pointing to the 4066R's cruise control and programmable panel as practical features for teams moving between jobs.
A new approach at Centennial Parklands
That versatility has been put to work at Centennial Parklands, one of Green by Nature's newest contracts and one of Sydney's most recognisable open space precincts.
Sprawling across more than 189 hectares, the grand parklands include gardens, wetlands, sports fields, wide avenues, cycle tracks and equestrian facilities.
To deliver on the contract, Green by Nature purchased two John Deere tractors, including a 4066R and a 5075E.
The 5075E operates with a Trimax Snake mower across large open space areas, helping lift productivity and operator comfort.
"That big tractor goes around the large open space and the productivity is unreal," Mr Roser said.
"The operator is in a nice, big, air-conditioned cabin and can go around that park all day mowing. That productivity has made a huge difference for the client."
The contract has also taken Green by Nature into a new area of specialist surface management, with the team now responsible for maintaining Centennial Parklands' equestrian arenas.
Elite arenas requires a different level of precision, with the sand footing needing to be graded consistently and to the right depth each day.
To support that work, the 4066R has been matched with a custom-built equestrian grading implement, designed specifically to fit the tractor and calibrated to the required depth of the footing materials.
"When we won the contract, I told the equestrian company I planned to run it on a John Deere 4066R. I sent them the specifications and they designed it to fit the tractor," Mr Roser said.
While the work sits outside Green by Nature's usual turf management practices, Mr Roser said the tractor had made a real difference to operations at Centennial Parklands.

Mr Roser said Hutcheon & Pearce's support extended beyond the initial purchase, with the team providing practical advice, training and guidance when new equipment arrives or issues need to be worked through.
"When we get new machinery or have issues, our local John Deere dealer are always keen to come out or send someone out to offer advice, training and guidance," Mr Roser said.
For a fast-moving business working across multiple sites and demanding contracts, that responsiveness helps keep machinery moving and gives the Green by Nature team confidence in the equipment doing the job.
"Relationships are one part of it, but they still have to provide a service. Hutcheon & Pearce delivers on both," he said.
Ready for the next wave of turf technology
While the current focus is on managing productivity across a mobile Sydney operation, Mr Roser said the next step for turf and open space management will be greater use of automation, GPS guidance, live tracking and real-time data.
For large contractors like Green by Nature, that shift is about improving visibility across machinery, people and performance, particularly as clients look for greater confidence that work is being completed efficiently.
"Clients want to see automation, GPS guidance and real-life tracking. They want to be able to see what we are doing on big contracts," Mr Roser said.
"It has gone away from the old-school way of saying, 'everything's getting done'. There is a much bigger focus on reporting, scheduling, monitoring and data."
With John Deere continuing to develop connected machinery and precision turf technology, Mr Roser said the ability to better understand machine location, run time, idle time and maintenance needs was an area Green by Nature was watching closely. "For Green by Nature, it is about making sure we stay current and do not get stuck in old ways or get left behind," he said.
