Raising the standards at Bayview Golf Club
Crestmead, Queensland (27 April, 2026) — Set against the tidal waterways of Sydney's Northern Beaches, Bayview Golf Club offers members and course managers alike a challenging yet rewarding experience.
Featuring tree-lined fairways, signature dogleg holes, picturesque waterways, and three century-old elephant sculptures that serve as a reminder of a bygone era in the club's history, the par-71 course is anything but ordinary.
For Course Superintendent, James Thomas, and his team of 13 greenskeepers and horticulturalists, management of the course requires precision, reliability and consistency.
It's something they've been able to achieve since transitioning their fleet to John Deere in September 2024, with the results both measurable and visible.
A noticeable lift in playing surfaces
With two 7500A PrecisionCut™ Fairway Mowers, two 2750 PrecisionCut Triplex Mowers and four 180 E-Cut Hybrid Walk Greens Mowers now in action, the most significant improvement on the course has been in the quality of the cuts, particularly on the greens.
"We've probably been able to increase our green speed by at least a foot, maybe more, since we swapped over to John Deere," James said.
"We just seem to be getting such a better cut, especially on the greens surfaces."
It's something which hasn't gone unnoticed by members.
"Sometimes it can get a bit quick for them, but for the most part, the members have definitely noticed the improvement in the playing surface."
Management of the bentgrass greens, kikuyu fairways and Santa Ana couch tee boxes is made that extra bit challenging by the fact that the course sits partially within a floodplain.
"Being in the floodplain can make it pretty difficult at times, but it also makes it more rewarding when we get the course looking really good," James said.
Precision in a sensitive environment
Operating in a floodplain adjacent to tidal waterways also means spray accuracy is critical.
This is where the club's HD200 SelectSpray™ Turf Sprayer and HD300 SelectSpray Turf Sprayer come to the fore.
"We've got to be very careful with what we spray and how close we get to the creek banks to ensure no adverse effects on the environment," James said.
"We really like how precise we can be with outputs on the sprayers and how easy it is to adjust flow rates on the computer."
Dealer support keeps the fleet moving
Eighteen months on from making the move to John Deere through their local dealer, Hutcheon & Pearce, James said the aftermarket support is just as strong as it was on day one.
"Recently, we needed a repair on a fairway mower, and Hutcheon & Pearce had a demo for me to use the next day while the parts were coming in," he said.
"They always answer the phone, and I don't think we've ever had to wait very long for an important part to arrive.
"We very rarely have machines down for more than three days."
Investing in the future
This support, coupled with their current fleet being a cut above the rest, and the use of John Deere Operations Center™ PRO Golf makes James more confident about expanding their John Deere range in the future.
"With the fleet all connected with PRO Golf, our equipment manager is really finding value in using it to help manage our fleet, monitor where equipment is on the course, as well as allocating our team rosters and stay on top of maintenance schedules," he said.
"The lease on our sprayers ends next year and we'd really like to look at getting at least one GPS precision sprayer.
"We have houses on all sides of us and we're burning through about 2,000 litres of diesel a month, so we're also very interested in looking at electric machines."
Until the new equipment arrives, James is content to continue delivering a quality playing experience for the Bayview Golf Club members, with the help of John Deere.
"I really love it at the end of the week when you can see the finished product, when everything mows up really well and you can see how hard your team has worked."
