The full-frame concept
Engine in the full-frame design
The engine is an integrated part of the full-frame concept. The engine is connected to the frame using vibration-absorbing isolators. Further vibration reduction is achieved by utilising a heavy-duty torsional damper in the cardan shaft, coupling the flywheel to the clutch housing. This technique provides the following benefits:
- Elimination of engine block stress, because the engine is no longer a structural part of the tractor
- Reduction of noise and vibration transfer to other tractor components
Durability and performance
The engine is integrated within the full frame and features the following:
- High-strength block
- Large displacement and ideal 1:1.2 bore-to-stroke ratio
- Free-breathing, crossflow cylinder head
- Full electronic engine management system
- Highly efficient dual-stage charge air cooler
- Gear-driven water pumps
- Wet cylinder liners
- Self-tensioning, maintenance-free poly-V belt
- Large rod-bearing area
- Exclusive dual-temperature cooling system
- Fuel-saving eco fan (viscous fan drive)
- Collar fan, fitting perfectly within a circular shroud
Injectors
Injector
Injectors deliver the same fuel pressure level to cylinders from the high-pressure common rail (HPCR):
- Magnetic valve provides fast and precisely metered fuel injection.
- Six-hole nozzles give optimum spray patterns and fine fuel atomization.
Performance-matched fuel consumption delivers reduced fuel costs per hour.

HPCR fuel injection system
Benefits
- HPCR (400 bar-1350 bar [5801.5 psi-19,580.1 psi]) delivers exactly the same fuel pressure level at all of the injectors.
- High responsiveness under all load and speed conditions extends the engine's working range to lower speeds, delivering more power and productivity in the field at outstanding fuel saving engine speeds.
- Performance-matched fuel consumption delivers reduced fuel costs per hectare.
Turbocharger
Turbocharger
All 6M Series Tractor engines have a fast-response turbocharger, which is perfectly matched to the respective engine settings.
The 4-cylinder engines, which have a high exhaust gas velocity in their shorter exhaust manifold system, achieve the best performance with a single-channel turbocharger.
The 6-cylinder engines have divided exhaust manifolds with a dual-channel turbocharger.
This careful matching benefits the operator with environmentally friendly, yet economic performance.
Horsepower standards
When comparing tractor performance information, it is important to understand the engine standards and measurements used by manufacturers when collecting the data.
ECE R120 refers to engine flywheel horsepower. The ECE R24 measurement is lower because the power required to operate the cooling fan is included.
Cooling philosophy
Cooling system
Meeting emission regulations with high-quality performance requires an efficient cooling system. This has been achieved with the PowerTech™ E engine, where excellent heat dissipation promotes an optimized and complete combustion:
- Compact
- Service friendly
- Highly efficient
Efficient cooling by design
- Cylinder block with water manifold on the cool side of the engine
- Crossflow design
- Wet cylinder liners
Cooling system
6M cooling system
The air-to-air charge air cooler (CAC), transmission, and hydraulic cooler (TOC) are located in front of the main radiator (RAD). The fuel cooler (FC) is located in front of the air conditioning and combination hydraulic cooler/radiator.
In this stacked cooling package, the optional air conditioning (AC) is the first full-size cooler. The fuel cooler and the front power take-off (PTO) cooler are always in front, if the 6M is ordered with F-PTO.
- Efficient cooling
- Reduced maintenance time and cost
- Good accessibility to service points due to slidable air-conditioning cooler and detachable side shielding between CAC and main radiator
Closed cooling system
Excellent reliability and serviceability are achieved by the automotive-type closed cooling system.
The system is maintenance free and maintains the correct coolant level for optimum cooling efficiency.
Mechanically driven coolant pump
Cooling pump
The coolant is circulated by the engine coolant pump, a mechanically driven impeller pump.
Plate-type oil cooler and filter
Plate-type oil cooler and filter
The integral full-flow oil cooler is a highly efficient plate-type heat exchanger. The cooler is integrated into the coolant cavity of the engine block, providing a significant advantage:
- High cooling efficiency as a result of full coolant flow from the water pump directed through the element
The vertically mounted full-flow oil filter is fitted with large pipes to reduce flow restrictions for increased reliability and engine lubrication.
The filter is mounted vertically for no-mess replacement.

6110M torque and engine characteristics
Highly efficient combination of viscous fan drive and collar fan design improves fuel efficiency
The optimisation of the viscous fan design regarding fan diameter, number of blades, and collar design lead to a significant reduction of parasitic losses.
- More engine performance is available at the wheels or at the PTO.
- Respectively, fuel consumption is reduced.
The temperature of the air passing through the radiator regulates the variable viscous fan drive speed between:
- 4-cylinder: 1200 rpm-2400 rpm
- 6-cylinder: 1200 rpm-2150 rpm (at rated speed and 25-degree ambient temperature)
Operating with light to medium engine loads (at rated engine speed) in cool ambient temperatures, the viscous fan drive speed is approximately 1200 rpm to 1600 rpm.
Even under heavy field conditions at low ambient temperatures, the slower running speeds of the viscous fan drive saves up to 3 kW (4 hp). The collar fan is precisely guided in a ring-shaped shroud. Thus, the airflow is directed, turbulence-free, through the radiator system, resulting in a higher flow rate and a simultaneous 10 percent reduction of the horsepower required for the fan drive. Hence, the total efficiency increase achieved by the collar fan/shroud system adds up to 20 percent compared to a conventional fan.
PowerCore® G2 air filter
